The longest gaps in Lotto history

A gap is the number of consecutive draws in which a given number did not come up. For each of the 49 numbers we give the longest completed gap from the whole history and the gap running after the latest draw.

Record gap of each number

By longest record. "Once every" = 1/(1−p)record: how often a gap in the random model would last that long or longer.

How we calculate this

A record is the longest completed gap of a number across the whole Lotto draw history. The period from the first draw in the history to a number’s first hit is not a gap — we do not know how long it ran before — and does not count towards the record. The current gap is measured from the last hit to the latest draw and is likewise not completed, which is why it can pass the record (“record running”).

The random model assumes every number comes up in a draw with probability p = 12,24 %, independently of previous draws. Then P(gap ≥ g) = (1−p)g, and “once per” is the inverse of that value. This is a descriptive comparison for a single gap; the gaps of different numbers in the same draws depend on one another, so we do not publish a significance test here.

What do these numbers show?
  • The longest gap in Lotto history: number 48 did not come up for 92 consecutive draws — from 19.02.1967 to 01.12.1968 (source: history, completed gaps of this number: 718).
  • In the random model (p = 12,24 % per draw) a gap this long or longer happens once in 165 555 gaps. The record is the longest among the many gaps of 49 numbers, so its very existence is not unusual.
  • After the latest draw 0 of 49 numbers had a current gap longer than half their own record. That describes the state, not a forecast — the length of a gap does not change the odds in the next draw.

These are historical data. Each draw is independent of previous draws, so these numbers do not tell us what will be drawn next.

How do I use this page?
  1. Find a number in the table and read its record gap along with the dates of the draws that opened and closed it.
  2. Click a column header to sort the table by record, date or current gap.
  3. The “once per” column says how rare such a gap would be in the random model — that is a comparison with the model, not a judgement of the number.
  4. Rows marked “record running” are numbers whose current gap has already passed their previous record.

What this page does not do: it does not point to numbers to play and does not say that any number is “due”.
