What are the roots of lottery games and where did they begin?

Historians of games of chance most often point to ancient China as the place where two elements known to us today from every collection point were first combined: selling a ticket before the outcome was decided, and a public draw of the result. Surviving references describe a game called the „white pigeon”, based on selecting several characters from a much larger set — most often from the list of characters in a classical primer.

Popular accounts often repeat the story that proceeds from such lotteries financed the construction of the Great Wall. It is an attractive anecdote, but historical sources do not confirm it unambiguously, and it is worth treating it with caution. What is certain, however, is something else: the very mechanism of picking a dozen or so characters from a large pool has survived for millennia. We can easily recognize it in the game of Keno, where 20 numbers are drawn out of 80, and the player bets on their own, much shorter set.

Genoa: from electing officials to a state lottery

A key moment for modern number games occurred in 16th-century Genoa. The Republic used to select some of its officials by drawing lots from a list of candidates, and residents began placing bets among themselves on whose names would be drawn. The phenomenon turned out to be so widespread that the authorities — instead of fighting it — decided to organize and tax it.

Over time, names were replaced with numbers, because the election cycle proved too infrequent for the players' appetite. This gave rise to the „5 out of 90” format, which spread across Europe and remained the standard for more than two centuries. Only in the 20th century did lotteries begin experimenting with other arrangements, seeking a balance between the probability of winning the main prize and the appeal of the jackpot. Poland's Lotto, in its „6 out of 49” formula, is one result of these efforts.

Polish beginnings: the 18th century and the first draw in 1957

The first mentions of a number lottery on Polish lands date back to the mid-18th century, during the reign of Augustus III. The game operated in a formula similar to the Genoese one, meaning selecting five numbers out of ninety. In the second half of the century, the right to run it passed into the hands of Italian entrepreneurs, and the state drew income from it in the form of concession fees — a scheme later known throughout Europe.

The modern history, however, begins only in 1956, when Totalizator Sportowy was established. The first draw of the Big Lotto took place on January 27, 1957, in Wrocław. For the first few decades, it was a „6 out of 49” bet held once a week; over time, more draw days were added, along with companion games — Lotto Plus, Mini Lotto, Multi Multi, and Kaskada. Today's weekly rhythm of three Lotto draws is the result of this gradual expansion, not the original design.

What statistics say about the odds

The number of all possible combinations of six numbers out of 49 is 13,983,816. This follows directly from the definition of combinations and does not depend on which numbers we choose. The probability of matching the six in a single bet is therefore about 1 in 14 million, and every combination — including the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 — has exactly the same chance.

This is worth emphasizing, because intuition suggests otherwise. Combinations that look „random” seem more probable than ordered ones, but this is a cognitive illusion, not a property of the draw. The balls have no memory: the result of the previous draw does not affect the next one, and a number that has not appeared for two years is neither more nor less probable than one drawn yesterday.

The analysis of number frequency therefore has cognitive and organizing value, but not predictive value. Historical statistics describe what has happened; they do not describe what will happen. No betting system changes the probability of a single random event — it can only change the distribution of costs, because more bets simply means a bigger expense.

How draws and tickets are secured

Draws are held publicly, in the presence of a supervising committee, and their course is recorded. Bets are accepted up to a strictly defined moment before the draw — once it passes, the system closes sales and no ticket can be added or modified anymore. Data on placed bets reaches the operator's IT systems before the draw begins, which removes any basis for speculation about results being added after the fact.

The ticket itself contains a unique identification number linked to a record in the system. Verification at payout is not based on looking at the paper, but on comparison with the database, which makes forging the document pointless. Prizes are subject to limitation periods counted from the day of the draw — once they expire, the claim lapses. This, and no secret conspiracy, explains most stories about unclaimed winnings.

The reality of the game in 2026

Lotto and Lotto Plus draws take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in the evening, around 22:00. The basic bet in Lotto costs 3 PLN, and the surcharge for Lotto Plus is an additional one PLN per bet.
