Is it worth playing the same numbers every time?

Playing the same set of numbers all the time neither raises nor lowers your chance of winning. In Lotto it stands at 1 in 13,983,816 for every draw and doesn't depend on whether you're playing that set for the first or the thousandth time. The balls have no memory and keep no record of what's already come up.

A fixed set does change something else, though — the amount you'd actually receive if you won. If your six numbers happen to be birth dates, you'll be splitting the pot with hundreds of people playing similarly. That's the only real effect of your number choice, and the only one you actually control.

Where the fixed-set myth came from

The myth rests on what's known as the gambler's fallacy — the belief that after a series of losses a win "has to" come eventually, because the statistics will even out. The reasoning sounds sensible: since any given set has just over thirteen million chances to one, playing it for twenty years means you're gradually "claiming" a bigger share of that pool.

In reality, nothing of the sort happens. Past draws aren't stored in the drawing machine and don't affect the next one. The probability of a win is exactly the same on the first attempt as on the five-hundredth — mathematicians call this the independence of events. A win doesn't "ripen," and there's no such thing as a set that's already "due."

The second source of the myth is aversion to regret. A player who has typed the same set for years fears the scenario where their numbers come up in the very week they skip. That fear is understandable psychologically, but it has nothing to do with probability theory — and it's often the strongest reason people stick to one set for decades.

Can a set "pay off" after years of play?

The table below shows how the probability of hitting the jackpot combination at least once grows if you play one entry per draw. The figures were calculated from the formula 1 − (1 − 1/13,983,816) raised to the power equal to the number of draws, assuming four Lotto draws a week.

The key point is the note under the table: the same numbers would come up with random picks too. The formula doesn't ask which numbers you marked, only how many times you played. Playing for your entire adult life gets you past one tenth of a percent — and not one of these figures depends on which set you chose.

Splitting the pot — the only real effect of number choice

In Lotto, the first-tier prize is split among everyone who matched all six numbers. Two people with the same set get half each; five people get a fifth each. The chance of winning is identical for every set, but the expected payout isn't, because it depends on how many people play the same way you do.

The most commonly played sets share a common thread. Here's what's worth avoiding if you want the largest possible payout in case of a win:

  • Numbers from 1 to 31 — birth dates and anniversaries. This is the most common picking pattern, and it excludes as many as eighteen numbers from the pool of forty-nine.
  • Arithmetic sequences — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. They look "unlikely," so paradoxically a great many players mark exactly these.
  • Geometric shapes on the coupon — diagonals, crosses, columns. The coupon is a grid, and people love drawing shapes on it.
  • Numbers from the last draw — after every result, some players copy it onto their next coupon, hoping for a repeat.

A set that includes several numbers above 31 statistically has fewer "roommates." This doesn't raise your chance of winning by even a fraction of a percent — it only changes how many ways the pot would be split if a win occurred. What "overdue numbers" in statistics actually mean

On the site you'll find rankings of the numbers drawn most and least often, and those that haven't appeared in many draws. This is historical data and describes only the past. A number absent for a hundred draws is neither closer to nor further from being drawn than one that came up yesterday.

Differences in how often individual numbers appear are a normal effect of randomness, not a sign that the machine "favours" any of them. Across several thousand draws and forty-nine numbers, a spread of a few dozen hits between the most and least frequent number is exactly what statistics would expect from pure chance.

Statistics are a tool for browsing history, not for predicting outcomes. Treat them as an archive of results, not as a hint — because that's a role they simply can't play. The same goes for the random pick generator: it doesn't raise your odds, it just saves time filling out a coupon and happens to skip typical human patterns.

A fixed set and the cost of playing

There is one argument for a fixed set that has nothing to do with probability — spending discipline. Someone who plays one specific entry usually spends the same amount every week. Someone who picks fresh numbers each time more often adds extra entries on impulse, especially when the jackpot is high.

It's worth calculating your annual cost of playing. With four draws a week and one PLN 3 entry, that comes to PLN 624 a year; with two entries, PLN 1,248. That's a real expense and the only figure in this entire article you have full control over. Summary in three sentences

A fixed set doesn't change your chance of winning — that stays constant and independent of your coupon history. What it does change is your expected payout, because sets based on dates and patterns get split among a large number of other players. So if you do stick to one set, the decision worth thinking through isn't "whether to keep playing the same numbers" but "whether my six numbers include any above 31."

Games of chance are intended solely for adults (18+). Every draw is independent, and no picking method increases your chance of winning. Play only with amounts whose loss wouldn't affect your household budget.
