Yes — a Lotto winner remains anonymous to the public. Totalizator Sportowy does not publish the first name, last name, or image of the person who hit the jackpot, and it has no legal obligation to do so. The only thing it discloses is the town and the address of the sales point where the winning ticket was bought — hence headlines like „the jackpot fell in Rzeszów”, in which no name is ever mentioned.

Anonymity toward the media, however, is not the same as anonymity toward institutions. Collecting a large prize requires identification, the bank knows the data at the moment of the transfer, and the tax settlement passes through the organizer acting as payer. Below we separate these three layers: who actually sees your data, what is published, and where the town names in press reports come from.

What Totalizator Sportowy publishes and what it does not

The organizer's announcements after a major draw have a fixed set of information and an equally fixed set of omissions. The table below shows what becomes public knowledge and what stays exclusively in the payout documentation.

How the media find out which city the win fell in

The town name is not a leak or the result of journalistic investigation. It is provided by the organizer itself, and it refers to the place where the ticket was bought, not the player's place of residence. Someone who bought a ticket in Gdańsk while on holiday but lives in Katowice appears in the announcement as a win from Gdańsk.

This information is published for two reasons. First, it confirms that the prize actually fell and that the game works — without it, a jackpot announcement would be unverifiable. Second, the sales point itself usually likes to boast about such an event, since it is free advertising for it. The sales point address is not the player's personal data, so its disclosure requires no one's consent.

For games where the ticket is bought online, the sales point does not exist in the traditional sense, so announcements tend to be more general on this point. A list of wins by city can be found in the biggest wins section — this is the same data that reaches the press.

Who actually knows the winner's data

Anonymity has its limits, set by three institutions. None of them publish the data, but each of them processes it.

• Totalizator Sportowy — for prizes above the threshold set in the regulations, it requires an identity document and the original ticket. Without showing an ID, it will not pay out a large prize.
• The bank — large amounts are paid by bank transfer, so the account must be in the recipient's name. The bank applies standard anti-money-laundering procedures here and may ask for an explanation of the source of the funds; a payout confirmation from the organizer is fully sufficient.
• The tax office — receives the settlement from the organizer acting as the payer of the flat-rate tax. The winner does not file a declaration themselves and does not report the win in their annual tax return.

Can you collect a prize without giving your name

For small wins — yes. A low-value ticket is cashed in at any sales point and no one asks for a document; the ticket itself counts as proof of the claim. It is only once the threshold specified in the regulations is exceeded that the payout moves to a Totalizator Sportowy branch and the identification requirement kicks in.

There is no legal way to collect a large prize „to the bearer” without showing a document. A paper ticket should be kept until payout in a condition that does not fade or get damaged — it is the basis of the claim, and the right to collect it expires after the limitation period counted from the draw date. Common misunderstandings

The first: that winners' names are public and available in some registry. They are not — the organizer does not publish them and keeps no open list. The second: that the town given in the announcement reveals where the winner lives. It does not, because it refers solely to the point where the ticket was bought.

The third: that a cash payout avoids leaving any trace at all. For large prizes, payout happens by bank transfer, and identification takes place at collection regardless. The fourth: that the organizer's silence means no one knows the data. The organizer, the bank, and — in the form of the payer's aggregate declaration — the tax administration all know it; the difference is that none of these institutions announces it.

The fifth misunderstanding concerns the game itself, not privacy. Draw history does not change the probability of the next result — every draw is independent, and a number that has not appeared for a long time does not, for that reason, have a higher chance of being drawn.
