What is a 1996 Multi Lotek jackpot worth today? Thirty years of Multi Multi prizes
At a glance
PLN 100,000 in the year Multi Lotek launched had roughly the purchasing power of PLN 350,400 in October 2026. A standard single-stake Multi Multi ticket pays PLN 250,000 gross for matching ten numbers out of ten. The prize rose by PLN 150,000 in cash terms, yet fell about PLN 100,400 short of keeping up with prices. With Plus, the outcome depends on which ball comes out last and whether the player paid for the option before the draw.
What could you win in Multi Lotek in 1996?
Polsat viewers saw the first Multi Lotek draw on 18 March 1996. A contemporary report in the newspaper Głos Pomorza put the top prize for ten matches at ten times the base stake at ten billion old złoty. Tickets were already sold in the new currency, but large sums were still often quoted in the old one. Removing four zeros converts the headline prize to one million new złoty. Dividing by ten gives PLN 100,000 at the single stake.
That account lets us reconstruct the top prize. It does not tell us how much nine matches paid in March 1996. The historical comparison below therefore covers the jackpot. The separate tables for lower prize tiers use the operator’s published 2026 figures.
| Stake multiplier | Multi Lotek in 1996 | Equivalent in October 2026 prices | Multi Multi in 2026 | Gap against inflation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ×1 | 100,000 PLN | ≈ 350,400 PLN | 250,000 PLN | ≈ −100,400 PLN |
| ×10 | 1,000,000 PLN | ≈ 3,504,000 PLN | 2,500,000 PLN | ≈ −1,004,000 PLN |

How much does a standard ten-number ticket pay?
Nine matches on a ten-number ticket and nine matches on a nine-number ticket belong to different columns in the LOTTO prize table. Throughout this comparison the player picks exactly ten numbers for one draw. A standard ticket costs PLN 2.50. The small payouts show how different getting a match can be from making a profit.
| Matches out of ten | Gross prize | After ticket cost, before tax |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 250,000 PLN | 249,997.50 PLN |
| 9 | 10,000 PLN | 9997.50 PLN |
| 8 | 520 PLN | 517.50 PLN |
| 7 | 140 PLN | 137.50 PLN |
| 6 | 12 PLN | 9.50 PLN |
| 5 | 4 PLN | 1.50 PLN |
| 4 | 2 PLN | -0.50 PLN |
| 3 | 0 PLN | -2.50 PLN |
| 2 | 0 PLN | -2.50 PLN |
| 1 | 0 PLN | -2.50 PLN |
| 0 | 0 PLN | -2.50 PLN |
Four matches pay PLN 2. After the PLN 2.50 ticket price, the player is still 50 groszy down. At the other end of the table, going from nine matches to ten takes the prize from PLN 10,000 to PLN 250,000. When comparing old tickets or accounts of a win, check how many numbers were selected and how many stakes were bought.
When did Plus start, and what does the extra payment buy?
Totalizator Sportowy dates the introduction of Plus to 8 October 2007. A player buying a ticket in 1996 could not choose it. The Plus number is the twentieth and last ball in the same draw. All ten numbers on a ticket can be among the twenty drawn while the last ball belongs to the other ten. That is why a perfect match can still lead to two different payouts.
| Matches out of ten | Plus outside the selection | Plus in the selection |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 250,000 PLN | 2,500,000 PLN |
| 9 | 10,000 PLN | 50,000 PLN |
| 8 | 520 PLN | 1520 PLN |
| 7 | 140 PLN | 380 PLN |
| 6 | 12 PLN | 36 PLN |
| 5 | 4 PLN | 12 PLN |
| 4 | 2 PLN | 6 PLN |
| 3 | 0 PLN | 4 PLN |
| 2 | 0 PLN | 4 PLN |
| 1 | 0 PLN | 10 PLN |
| 0 | 0 PLN | Impossible |
Look at the smaller prizes. One match can pay PLN 10 while two pay just PLN 4 when the Plus ball is among the matches in each case. With eight matches the distinction is more intuitive. The ticket pays PLN 520 if the Plus ball misses or PLN 1,520 in total if it hits. The basic PLN 520 is already included in the latter figure.
Did Plus make up for inflation?
Imagine two players with the same ten numbers. One spent PLN 2.50 and the other PLN 5. Both match all ten. If the final ball falls outside their selection, each wins PLN 250,000 gross. If it is one of their ten, the first still gets PLN 250,000 while the second wins PLN 2.5 million. That exceeds the inflation-adjusted 1996 prize more than sevenfold. In the first scenario, even the more expensive ticket falls about PLN 100,400 short.
Once all ten selections are known to have matched, exactly half of the twenty balls belong to that ticket. With random draw order, the chance of the last ball being one of them is then 10/20. That is a conditional probability. Before the draw, the chance of matching all ten numbers is about one in 8.9 million. Buying Plus changes the payout for certain outcomes without changing which balls are drawn.
How did we convert PLN 100,000 into October 2026 prices?
Our starting point is the average price level in 1996. We multiply the annual Statistics Poland consumer price indices for 1997 through 2024, dividing each by 100. We then move from the 2024 average to October 2025 using 104.0 from the monthly series whose base is the previous calendar year’s average. The final step is the October 2026 flash estimate of a 3.5% year-on-year increase. The combined multiplier is about 3.504. It measures the change since the average price level in the launch year rather than prices on the exact day of the first draw.
The calculation works in either direction. Multiplying PLN 100,000 by 3.504 gives about PLN 350,400. Dividing the modern PLN 250,000 prize by the same factor gives roughly PLN 71,350 in 1996 money. The gross jackpot therefore lost about 28.7% of its purchasing power. This compares prizes offered to players at different dates. Someone who received and spent the money in 1996 could use its full purchasing power at the time.
The price of playing also changed. The contemporary press report puts the cost of a single ticket, including charges, at PLN 1.22. That corresponds to about PLN 4.27 in October 2026 prices. Today’s PLN 2.50 basic ticket is below that level, while PLN 5 with Plus is above it. To work out how the average return per złoty actually changed, we would also need the historical payouts for every lower prize tier.
How far short of the original purchasing power is the prize?
For ten matches at a single standard stake, the gap is about PLN 100,400 gross in October 2026 prices. Adding that much to PLN 250,000 would restore the average purchasing power of the PLN 100,000 launch-year prize. On a ticket with a winning Plus ball the result goes the other way. To make a meaningful comparison, start with the number of selections, the stake multiplier and the identity of the final ball.
