Most Commonly Picked Numbers — Why Your Choice Affects the Prize Amount

Every combination in Lotto has an identical probability of being drawn — one in 13,983,816. Your choice of numbers has no effect on this whatsoever. It does, however, affect how many other players hit the same combination as you, since the first-tier prize is split among all winners. Numbers in the 1–31 range are picked more often, because people fill in birth dates, anniversaries, and apartment numbers. A ticket containing only such numbers statistically pays out less if it wins than a ticket with numbers spread across the whole pool.

This is one of the most commonly confused distinctions in number games. The claim that "these numbers pay out more" sounds like a promise of hitting more often, but it isn't one at all. It's about something else: hitting the sixer alongside twelve other people pays a different amount than hitting it alone. Below we break this down piece by piece — how we know some numbers are more popular, how big the difference is, and what conclusions this doesn't let you draw.

Why numbers 1–31 are picked more often

The reason is mundane: the calendar. A month has at most 31 days, so every birthday, wedding anniversary, child's birthday, or other anniversary falls within the 1–31 range. The same range covers most apartment numbers and the days on which something happened to someone. A player looking for "their" numbers reaches for them instinctively, because they're the only ones that mean anything to them.

Lotto has a pool of 49 numbers. The 1–31 range makes up 63 percent of the pool, but it's picked disproportionately more often. Numbers from 32 to 49 have no calendar equivalent and end up on a ticket mainly when a player picks randomly or deliberately reaches for the higher range. The imbalance therefore comes from human memory, not from the mechanics of the game.

How do we know this, since the National Lottery Operator doesn't publish a breakdown of which numbers players pick on their tickets? From the payout distribution. When all six numbers in a given draw fall below 32, the number of first-tier winners tends to be noticeably higher than in draws with numbers spread across the whole pool — for the same number of tickets sold. This is an indirect but unambiguous trace of how people fill in their tickets. Exact proportions vary between countries and games, so we don't give specific percentages here: we don't have a public, verifiable source for them.

How the split affects the amount — the numbers

The first-tier prize in Lotto is split equally among all tickets with a sixer. The table shows what happens to the same pool with different numbers of winners. The amounts are illustrative and serve only to demonstrate the splitting mechanism.

The difference between the first and last row is twelvefold. The probability of hitting a sixer was exactly the same in each of these cases — only the number of people who hit the same combination changed. That's the entire point of this article.

Which combinations are played most often

Beyond the 1–31 range itself, there are patterns that appear on tickets exceptionally often. They don't change the odds of winning, but they do increase the risk of sharing the prize.

  • Arithmetic sequences — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. Chosen by players who assume that "something like this could never come up", so they'd be the only one. They wouldn't.
  • Graphic patterns on the ticket — a diagonal, a cross, a border around the edge, a vertical column. The ticket has a grid, and people like symmetry.
  • Full dates — day, month, and the last two digits of the year, filled out with two more numbers. Almost always fall below 32.
  • Numbers considered lucky — 7, 13, 17 and their combinations. The popularity is cultural, not statistical.
  • Results of the previous draw — some players copy them, hoping for a repeat. The probability is identical to any other combination, but the competition is greater.

If you want to avoid all these patterns at once, the simplest route is a random pick. The quick-pick generator spreads numbers across the whole pool without any regard for the calendar or the shape of the ticket.

Do less frequently drawn numbers "have to" come up eventually

No. This is the most common error in reasoning about games of chance, known as the gambler's fallacy. The balls in the drum have no memory and don't know that one of them hasn't come up for thirty draws. The probability of any number being drawn in the next draw is the same, regardless of what happened before.

Historical statistics show what has happened, and nothing more. They're interesting, they can be browsed and compared, but they're not used for prediction. In the Lotto statistics you'll see how many times each number has come up and when it last appeared — that's a record of the past, not a hint for the future.

It's also worth distinguishing between two questions that are easy to confuse. The first: "which number will come up next time" — there's no answer to that, and nobody has one. The second: "how many people will I share the prize with if I win" — the answer to that partly exists and follows from how people fill in their tickets. Only the second question has any practical meaning.

What this means in practice

If you play and want to minimize the risk of sharing the pool, avoid buying only numbers from the 1–31 range, don't arrange patterns on the ticket, and don't copy previous results. That's it. There's no method here for winning — there's only a way to make an eventual win worth more.

The effect applies only to the highest prize tiers, where there are few winners. For the third tier, which tens of thousands of people hit in every draw, the prize is fixed and the split changes nothing. This whole calculation only matters for the sixer and for large jackpots, when the number of tickets sold grows, and so does the chance that someone hits the same combination as you.

Finally, the most important thing: no choice of numbers increases your chance of winning. The odds of hitting a sixer in Lotto are one in nearly fourteen million and are identical for a ticket with birth dates and for a randomly generated ticket. The only thing that changes is what you'll get in the unlikely event that you win.

Games of chance are intended solely for adults (18+). The outcome of each draw is entirely random and independent of previous draws.
