The biggest wins in the history of Polish number games

The question of the highest win in a Polish number game comes back every time a jackpot exceeds several dozen million zloty. The answer depends on which game we're talking about. Eurojackpot has a European pool, and that's where the highest Polish prizes fall. Lotto, played only within the country, has its own record — higher than in Totalizator's other games, but several times lower than the European one.

Below we gather what is known about the records for individual games, along with towns and years. We start, however, with the thing that determines the credibility of the whole list: where this data comes from and what it doesn't include.

Where the record data comes from

Information about the highest wins is published by Totalizator Sportowy — the organiser of all number games in Poland. The announcement includes the draw date, the prize amount, and the town and address of the outlet where the winning ticket fell. It contains no personal data, since winners remain anonymous and regulations don't allow their disclosure without consent.

This creates two limitations worth remembering when reading any list of records. First: the amounts reported in the media are sometimes gross values, before the ten percent tax deduction. Second: lists from different sources sometimes mix a prize from a single draw with the sum of several wins by one player, or with wins from foreign games that have nothing to do with Polish Lotto.

That's why in this list we give orders of magnitude and years, not amounts down to the zloty. A figure recalled from memory or copied from an unsigned source is worse than not having it at all — and quite a few of these circulate online when it comes to lottery records.

Records by game — the breakdown

The table orders the records by game. The "order of magnitude" column deliberately doesn't give exact amounts to the zloty — see the note above. The "pool" column shows why the differences are so large: a game with a European pool has different possibilities for jackpot growth than a domestic game.

Why Eurojackpot beats Lotto by an order of magnitude

The difference doesn't come from more players in Poland, but from how the game is built. Eurojackpot is played simultaneously in more than a dozen European countries, and the whole pool is combined into one pot. The jackpot therefore grows several times faster than in a domestic game and reaches levels unreachable for Lotto, regardless of how many tickets are sold in Poland.

The second factor is the difficulty of matching. In Eurojackpot you have to pick five numbers out of fifty plus two extra numbers out of twelve — there are far more combinations than with six numbers out of forty-nine in Lotto. Rarer wins mean longer jackpot streaks, and longer streaks mean higher records. It's the same mechanism working in the opposite direction in Mini Lotto: an easier match, more frequent wins, lower amounts.

This leads to a practical conclusion for reading records: comparing the highest prize in Mini Lotto with the highest in Eurojackpot says nothing about which game is "better". It only says how large the pool is and how hard it is to hit.

Where the biggest wins fall

Totalizator's announcements name the town and the outlet, so it's possible to reconstruct the geography of the records. There's no pattern in it that could be exploited. High wins have fallen both in big cities and in towns of a few thousand people — simply wherever someone bought the winning ticket.

The idea circulating online of looking for a "lucky outlet" is based on confusing cause and effect. An outlet where a big win fell usually sells more tickets than average — and that's precisely why it had a bigger chance of being the one where the winning ticket landed. The win itself changes nothing at that outlet for the future, because the draw takes place in Warsaw and doesn't know where the ticket was printed.

It does, however, matter in practice when collecting the prize. The lowest wins are paid out by every retail outlet, but for amounts counted in millions a visit to a Totalizator Sportowy branch is required. How much of the record remains after tax

The amounts given in announcements are gross values. A flat-rate tax of ten percent of the entire value — not just the surplus — is deducted from a prize exceeding 2,280 zloty. For a Lotto record of around 36 million zloty, that means around 3.6 million zloty in tax and around 32.4 million to be paid out.

The winner doesn't have to do anything about it. Totalizator Sportowy is the tax payer: it withholds the due amount at payout and remits it to the tax office. Can anything be read from the records

Nothing can be read from them that would help in the next draw. The numbers that made up a record win have no property distinguishing them from the others — each draw is independent of previous ones and has no memory. The combination that produced 36 million has exactly the same probability in the next draw as any other.

The history of results is, however, interesting in its own right, and worth browsing as a record of what has already happened. Records are therefore best treated the way they're presented here: as a record of specific events on specific dates. Interesting, sometimes surprising, but with no predictive value whatsoever.
