In the Lottery you mark 6 numbers out of 49. The number of all possible combinations is 6 out of 49, which is exactly 13,983,816. The draw indicates one of them, and each is equally likely. This is the entire mathematics of this game, and there is no room in it for strategy.

The set 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 has exactly the same probability as a set that looks „random”. The impression that one is less possible than the other comes from how a human evaluates chance — not from the rules of the draw.

Draws are independent of each other. The ball does not remember the previous result, so a number that hasn't come up in fifty draws is not „overdue”. In the next draw it has exactly the same probability as any other.

What really changes the odds, and what only looks like it does

System play: more bets on one coupon

A full system involves marking more numbers than six. The coupon is then converted into all six-number combinations from those numbers, and you pay for each one separately. With seven marks it is 7 bets, with eight it is 28, with nine it is 84, and with twelve it is 924.

A system has one real property: if several of the marked numbers are drawn, hits count in many bets at once, so lower-tier prizes accumulate. However, this does not change the probability of a single bet — it changes the distribution of what can be won when there is a hit.

There are also reduced systems, in which you play only part of the combinations, with a guarantee of a lower prize tier for a certain number of hits. They are cheaper and give a smaller chance of the top prize. It is purely a matter of budget, not cleverness.

Group bets and what needs to be agreed in writing

Pooling money in a group lets you pay for more bets with a smaller individual contribution. However, the arithmetic is symmetrical: ten times more bets means ten times higher odds, but also a split of any prize into ten parts. The expected payout per person does not change by a single zloty.

The prize is collected by the bearer of the coupon, so the group should agree in advance who paid how much, who keeps the coupon and how the winnings are divided. Without such a document, a dispute over several million is a dispute of one word against another.

It is also worth establishing whether the group plays once or in successive draws — and what happens when someone stops contributing halfway through the series.

Methods that don't work, even though they sound reasonable

Progressive systems, that is raising the stake after every loss, do not work in a game with fixed probability. In an independent draw there is no moment when a win becomes „more due”, and rising stakes very quickly exceed the possibilities of a household budget. A sequence of a dozen or so losses is a normal occurrence in the Lottery, not an exception.

Also ineffective are picking „overdue” numbers, avoiding sets that have already come up before, and analyzing the balls and the drawing machine. Draws are supervised and recorded, and the replacement of ball sets additionally rules out the hypothesis of a lasting bias of any number.

Paid „guaranteed systems” and generators sold online have no advantage whatsoever over a random selection. They sell order where there is no order.

The only defensible argument for choosing specific numbers concerns not the odds, but the amount: avoiding birth dates (that is, the range 1–31) and popular patterns on the coupon reduces the risk that, upon winning, you share the prize with several other people. The probability of winning remains the same.
