Group summary

Group n Mean SD

What do these numbers mean?
  • A small p value indicates that at least one mean differs.
  • A significant result should be followed by planned or post-hoc comparisons.

ANOVA assumes independent observations, approximately normal residuals and similar group variances.

How do I use this page?
  1. Paste at least two groups.
  2. Review means and standard deviations.
  3. Read F, df and p.

What this page does not do: ANOVA assumes independent observations, approximately normal residuals and similar group variances.

Theory — what is one-way ANOVA?

One-way ANOVA tests the hypothesis that all population means of the compared groups are equal. The calculator takes pasted group data and separates its variation into a between-group part and a within-group part. The F statistic compares the variation among group means with the variation among observations within groups. The overall result alone does not show which specific groups differ — that requires further comparisons.

Frequently asked questions

Does ANOVA identify the different groups?
No. The overall result requires follow-up comparisons.
