Eta squared calculator
Choose η² or partial η² and enter the required sums of squares from an ANOVA table.
How do I use this page?
- Choose η² or partial η².
- Copy sums of squares from the ANOVA table.
- Read the result and denominator used.
What this page does not do: The result depends on the design and ANOVA table components. It is not bias corrected and does not replace a confidence interval or practical-importance assessment.

Theory — what is the difference between eta squared and partial eta squared?
Eta squared describes the share of the total variability in the data explained by a given effect. Partial eta squared compares that same effect only against its corresponding error term, ignoring the rest of the model. In a one-way design both measures can give the same result, but in analyses with multiple factors they usually differ. That is why η² and partial η² are not interchangeable — each uses a different denominator and describes the strength of the effect differently.
