How to use this page
- Choose a median or paired design.
- Paste values in matching order.
- Read sign counts, ties, effective n and p-value.
What this page does not do: Doubling the smaller tail is a conservative two-sided definition for a discrete distribution. The tool does not calculate a confidence interval for the median.

The sign test uses only difference direction: positive or negative. Ties are removed and both signs have probability 0.5 under the null.
The p-value is an exact two-sided binomial tail. The test is robust but usually less powerful than a paired t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
Frequently asked questions
How does it differ from Wilcoxon?
The sign test uses direction only. Wilcoxon also ranks difference magnitudes and assumes symmetric differences.
What happens to ties?
Zero differences are excluded from the test distribution and reported separately.
