What is Totalizator Sportowy

Totalizator Sportowy is a State Treasury company established by a resolution of the Presidium of the Government on 17 December 1955; bet sales began on 25 January 1956. Until 1997 it operated as a state enterprise, and was then transformed into a limited liability company whose sole shareholder remains the State Treasury.

Part of the revenue from every bet feeds dedicated funds: the Culture Promotion Fund, the Physical Culture Development Fund, and the Gambling Problem Solving Fund. This sets Totalizator's games apart from commercially run betting — but it changes nothing in the probability calculation on the player's side.

Comparison of number games

The table below lists the parameters that fully determine the probability. The values given apply to hitting the highest prize tier in a single standard bet.

The denominators follow directly from the formula for the number of combinations without repetition for a given pool and number of picks. Bet prices and exact draw times change over time and are set by the organizer — check them at lotto.pl before purchase.

Lotto and Lotto Plus — large pool, rare wins

In Lotto you pick six numbers out of 49. There are 13,983,816 possible combinations in total, and that is the denominator of the probability for a single bet. Draws take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in the evening, around 10:00 PM — the exact time and the betting cut-off are set by the organizer.

Lotto Plus is an additional draw run on the same numbers you picked, added on top of the standard bet. The top prize there is fixed, not rolled over — this is the key difference from Lotto, where an unclaimed first-tier pool carries over to the next draw and grows.

A rollover changes the prize amount but does not touch the probability. Whether the pool is 20 million zlotys or 2 million, the chance of hitting six numbers is identical. What does increase is the number of bets sold, and with it the risk that a winning combination will be split between several players.

Mini Lotto and Kaskada — smaller pool, lower stakes

Mini Lotto is five numbers out of 42, drawn daily. The chance of hitting all five is 1 in 850,668, roughly sixteen times more likely than hitting six in Lotto. In return, the top prize is usually counted in hundreds of thousands of zlotys, not millions — a smaller pool raises the frequency of wins and lowers the amount.

Kaskada is based on picking twelve numbers out of 24, with prizes also awarded for partial hits within individual parts of the bet. Draws take place twice a day, and the shorter gaps between them are sometimes mistakenly read as a higher chance — draw frequency does not affect the probability of a single bet.

Multi Multi and Eurojackpot — two extreme cases

Multi Multi lets you decide yourself how many numbers to pick — from one to ten out of a pool of 80, from which 20 are drawn. The more numbers picked, the higher the potential prize and the lower the probability of winning it; with ten picks it stands at 1 in 8,911,711. The „plus” option is a separate bet on a single, last drawn number.

Eurojackpot is an international game: five numbers out of 50 plus two from a separate pool of 12. Rollovers reach tens and hundreds of millions of euros, but the probability of hitting the top prize — 1 in 139,838,160 — is ten times lower than the chance of six numbers in Lotto. This is the most extreme example of the trade-off: the biggest prize comes with the biggest denominator.

Scratch cards and lotteries — a different mechanism

Scratch cards are not number games. The result is fixed at the moment of printing, and the total number of prizes in a given edition is set in advance and published in that scratch card's rules. The probability of winning any amount there is usually higher than in Lotto, but it mostly applies to low prizes, often equal to the purchase price.

Scratch card editions rotate — some are withdrawn, others introduced. Each one's rules include a prize table and the print run size, which lets you calculate the odds of winning yourself instead of relying on the advertising on the packaging.

What the numbers won't tell you

Every draw is independent of the previous ones. The fact that a number hasn't come up in a long time does not change its odds in the next draw — the balls have no memory. The frequency statistics we publish on the site describe the past and have no predictive value, no matter how much they look like a clear pattern.

Choosing a game is therefore a matter of preference, not calculation: more frequent small wins in Mini Lotto, or a rare shot at a big rollover in Lotto or Eurojackpot. The only decision that truly lies within a player's control concerns the amount set aside for bets — not which numbers to pick.
