Arithmetic Mean

Enter numbers separated by a comma or space and see the result along with the sum and the number of elements.

Separate values with a semicolon, space, or comma followed by a space. Decimals may use a point or comma, e.g. 4.5 or 4,5.

Fill in the fields above — the result is computed on this page.

How to use this page
  1. Fill in the fields in the form above — the result recomputes at once, with no page reload.
  2. Under the result you will find the interpretation scale, if the calculator has one: it says which range your value fell into.
  3. The formula we use is shown lower on this page — you can check the arithmetic yourself.
  4. To compute the same for another game or variant, change it in the select field — prices and pools update automatically.

What this page does not do: It does not point to numbers to play and does not predict a draw — every draw is independent of the previous ones.

The arithmetic mean is the simplest measure of the center of a data set. You sum all the values and divide by their number. For grades 4, 5, 3, 5, 4 the sum is 21, there are five elements, so the mean is 4.2. You could calculate the same by hand on paper, but a calculator becomes useful when there are dozens of numbers and it's easy to make a mistake while summing.

It's worth knowing the limitation of this measure: it reacts to extreme values more strongly than it might seem. One very large number can shift the result far from what most people would consider a typical value. For data with outlying values the median tends to be more sensible, meaning the middle value after sorting. These are two different answers to two different questions.

Numbers can be separated by semicolons, spaces or commas followed by spaces — pasting a column copied from a spreadsheet also works. The decimal part may use a comma or a dot. If you enter something that is not a number, the calculator will show a message instead of calculating — you will never see an empty value or the word NaN in the result. For a weighted average, where each number has a different weight, there is a separate calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the average of grades 4, 5, 3, 5, 4?

The sum is 21, there are five grades, so the average is 4.2. To reach a 4.5 average, this set still needs 1.5 more points in total.

What is the difference between the mean and the median?

The mean divides the sum by the number of elements, the median indicates the middle value. For the set 1, 2, 3, 4, 100 the mean is 22, while the median is only 3.

How many numbers can I enter?

Practically no limit — the calculator handles several thousand entries pasted from a spreadsheet. Empty entries between separators are skipped.

How do I write a decimal number?

Use a point or comma, for example 3.75 or 3,75. Separate consecutive values with a semicolon, space, or a new line.
