Theory — how does the inflation and purchasing power calculator work?

The inflation calculator assumes the same annual inflation rate for every year analyzed and applies compounding, showing how the future cost of an amount and its present purchasing power change over time. This is a calculation scenario, not a price forecast. The official CPI describes an average household consumption basket, so a person's actual inflation experience may differ if their spending pattern diverges from that basket. Purchasing power means the quantity of goods and services a given sum of money can buy.

Frequently asked questions

What does purchasing power mean?
It is the amount of goods and services you can buy for a given sum. With positive inflation, the same nominal amount usually buys less.
Is 4.1% a forecast?
No. It is the September 2026 year-on-year Statistics Poland reading stored in the data snapshot. You choose the future rate yourself.
Why is inflation compounded?
Each year changes the price level reached after the previous year, so multiplying the rate by the number of years is not enough.
