Theory — how do you convert annual salary to hourly pay?

A gross annual salary can only be compared with an hourly rate once you know the number of paid hours in the year. The calculator divides the annual salary by the paid weeks and weekly hours, following UK and US conventions, and also converts the other way, from hourly rate to annual salary. The result depends on the working hours and paid weeks you assume, that is, whether holidays are included. It does not convert currencies or taxes, so the figure shown is gross, before deductions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert annual salary to hourly pay?
Divide annual gross salary by paid weeks per year and hours per week. For £40,000, 52 weeks and 37.5 hours, the divisor is 1,950 paid hours.
Should I use 52 paid weeks?
Use 52 when annual salary includes paid leave. If some weeks are unpaid, enter the number of weeks that are actually paid.
Does the result include tax?
No. It is a gross-pay conversion. Use the UK salary calculator for an estimate of UK take-home pay.
