Theory — how are net, VAT and gross amounts converted?

The VAT calculator performs two reverse calculations depending on the chosen direction. Starting from a net amount, VAT equals net multiplied by the rate, and gross is the sum of net and VAT. Starting from a gross amount, VAT is computed using the Ministry of Finance formula, multiplying gross by the rate and dividing by one hundred plus the rate. To get gross from net, simply multiply net by one plus the VAT rate expressed as a fraction — for 23% that multiplier is 1.23.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate gross from net and VAT?
Multiply net by 1 plus the VAT rate. At 23%, use net × 1.23.
How do I calculate net from gross?
Divide gross by 1 plus the VAT rate. At 23%, use gross ÷ 1.23.
How do I extract VAT from a gross amount?
Multiply gross by the rate and divide by 100 plus the rate. At 23%, use gross × 23/123.
Does the calculator choose the correct VAT rate?
No. The applicable rate depends on the legal classification and facts of the transaction.
