WHR, or Waist-Hip Ratio tells you something BMI cannot see: which part of the body stores fat. The calculation is straightforward — waist circumference is divided by hip circumference. With a waist of 85 cm and hips of 100 cm has a WHR of 0.85. The key is a correct measurement: measure the waist at the narrowest point of the torso, roughly midway between the bottom rib and the hip bone, while exhaling and without pulling in the stomach. Measure the hips at the widest point of the buttocks. The measuring tape sits against the body without pressing into it.
The threshold values depend on gender, because natural body proportions differ. For women the threshold is 0.85, for men it is 1.0 — above these values, doctors speak of abdominal obesity, also called the apple type. Values below 0.8 for women and 0.9 for men indicate a pear-type distribution, considered more favorable metabolically. It is not about looks: visceral fat, stored around the abdominal organs, is hormonally active and linked to a higher risk of metabolic disease, while subcutaneous fat on the hips and thighs behaves much more mildly.
WHR does have a drawback, though. When both waist and hips gain size, the ratio may not change — someone who gains weight proportionally would get the same WHR as before, even though they gained a dozen or so kilograms. That is exactly why many specialists prefer WHtR, which divides waist by height and is not affected by this effect. It is best to look at both indicators together alongside BMI — only three numbers together give the full picture. If the result significantly exceeds the norm, consult it with a doctor.

What WHR value is normal?
For women, a normal value does not exceed 0.80, and a result of 0.85 or higher indicates abdominal obesity. For men, the norm reaches up to 0.90, and the abdominal obesity threshold is 1.00. Intermediate values are treated as borderline.
How do I correctly measure my waist and hips?
Measure your waist at the narrowest point of the torso, midway between the bottom rib and the hip bone, standing straight while exhaling, without pulling in your stomach. Measure your hips at the widest point of the buttocks. The tape should lie flat but not press into the skin.
What do apple and pear body shapes mean?
The apple type means a WHR above 0.85 for women or 1.00 for men — fat accumulates mainly around the abdomen. The pear type means lower values, where fat is stored on the hips and thighs. Abdominal fat distribution is linked to a higher metabolic risk.
Is WHR better than BMI?
It measures something different. BMI compares weight to height, while WHR shows where fat is stored. Two people with an identical BMI of 27 can have a WHR of 0.75 and 1.05, which means completely different metabolic risk. It is best to calculate both indicators.
