Low and high numbers in the draw

The Eurojackpot pool split in half: low numbers are 1–25, high numbers are 26–50. For every draw we count how many of the 5 drawn numbers were high. The random model is the exact hypergeometric distribution — computed from all possible sets, not from a simulation.

Low and high numbers versus the model

Bars show observed draws and the dashed line shows the expected count. 38.0 0 0: 3.0, expected 2.5 0 1: 15.0, expected 14.9 1 2: 24.0, expected 32.6 2 3: 38.0, expected 32.6 3 4: 19.0, expected 14.9 4 5: 1.0, expected 2.5 5

Bars: observed history; dashed line: expected count from the random model.

All low-high patterns

Observed = how many times the split came up in the N draws. Expected = N × the probability of that split in the model. The row „5 low + 0 high” is a draw with all-low numbers. A dash in the model columns means the model value is not available; 0.0% is a true zero.

How we calculate this

The boundary is half the pool rounded down: for a pool of 50 that is 25, so numbers from 26 upwards are high. The probability that exactly r of the 5 drawn numbers are high comes from the hypergeometric distribution: the number of ways of choosing r high numbers from 25 and 5−r low ones from 25, divided by the number of all sets. The „expected” column is that fraction multiplied by N. The difference between history and the model describes the sample here — we run no significance test and draw no conclusions from it about further draws.

Generate independent draws with the rules of this game and compare observed counts with the common expected value. Every run is different.

What do these numbers show?
  • In 100 draws the most frequent split was 2 low + 3 high: 38 times, that is 38,0% of draws (history). The random model assigns 32,6% to that split. The difference of 5,4 pp is a descriptive comparison, not a test result.
  • All-low or all-high numbers came up in 4 draws out of 100, that is 4,0% (history); the model gives 5,0%.
  • On average 2,58 high numbers fell per draw (history, N = 100), model: 2,50.

These are historical data. Each draw is independent of previous draws, so these numbers do not tell us what will be drawn next.

How do I use this page?
  1. Choose a number of recent draws or a range of years.
  2. Check which split into low and high numbers came up most often in this range.
  3. Compare the historical percentage with the model percentage in the same row; a dash in the model column means the model value is not available.
  4. Remember that every draw is independent — a difference from the model describes the past, not the future.

What this page does not do: it does not point to numbers to play and does not predict which split will come up next time.
