Commute Costs to Work

How much does commuting to work really cost per month. Four numbers are enough to find out the yearly amount.

The distance from home to work. The calculator will automatically double it to account for the return trip.

Average fuel consumption. If you don't know it, calculate it in the fuel consumption calculator.

Price from your last refuel. This is a sample value — check the current price list.

On average, there are about 21 working days per month in a year. Subtract vacation days and remote work days.

Parking, tolls, car wash — optional, added to the monthly cost.

Optional. The historical model adds 0.6 l/100 km per every 100 kg of load — an assumption, not a measurement.

Used only when the number of passengers is greater than zero.

How to use this page
  1. Fill in the fields in the form above — the result recomputes at once, with no page reload.
  2. Under the result you will find the interpretation scale, if the calculator has one: it says which range your value fell into.
  3. The formula we use is shown lower on this page — you can check the arithmetic yourself.
  4. To compute the same for another game or variant, change it in the select field — prices and pools update automatically.

What this page does not do: It does not point to numbers to play and does not predict a draw — every draw is independent of the previous ones.

Further reading

The cost of commuting rarely gets its own line in a household budget, even though over a year it can add up to a sum comparable to a vacation. The formula is simple: you multiply the round-trip distance by fuel consumption, divide by 100, and multiply by the fuel price. At 18 km one way, you cover 36 km a day. That's 2.59 liters a day, or 16.30 zl at a price of 6.29 zl per liter. With twenty-one working days, that's 342 zl a month and over four thousand zloty a year.

Note: this is the cost of fuel alone. The actual cost per kilometer driven is noticeably higher, because it also includes tire wear, oil, brake pads, insurance, inspections and — the biggest hidden expense — the car's loss of value. In practice, fuel accounts for roughly half of the full cost of car ownership. Multiplying the result by two gives an approximate figure for the full cost of commuting.

It's worth comparing the result with the price of a monthly transit pass. Monthly public transport passes usually fall in the range of 100–150 zl, which is less than half of the calculated fuel cost. If you carpool and take turns, divide the result by the number of people. Working remotely two days a week lowers the result by about forty percent — just reduce the number of days in the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an 18 km one-way commute cost per month?

At a consumption of 7.2 l/100 km and a price of 6.29 zl per liter — about 16.30 zl a day and 342 zl over 21 working days. That's over 4100 zl a year.

Does the calculator include the full cost of car ownership?

No, fuel only. Insurance, tires, servicing and depreciation add up to roughly the same amount again — multiply the result by two to estimate the total.
