Map scale calculator

Convert map centimetres to real-world metres or the other way round.

Result: —

Fill in the fields above — the result is computed on this page.

What do these numbers mean?
  • At 1:25000, 2 cm represents 500 m. In reverse, 500 m × 100 / 25000 = 2 cm.

The scale applies at the original map size. Resizing a printout or screen changes ruler measurements.

How do I use this page?
  1. Enter values or use the example in the form.
  2. Choose a mode or units where available.
  3. Read the result and check the calculation steps below.

What this page does not do: The scale applies at the original map size. Resizing a printout or screen changes ruler measurements.

Theory — how does map scale work?

A map scale, for example 1:25000, tells you how many real-world units correspond to one unit on the map. At that scale, a 2 cm segment on the map represents 500 m on the ground. The calculator converts in both directions: from centimetres on the map to real-world metres and back, for example 500 m times 100 divided by 25000 gives 2 cm again. Knowing any two of the three values — the scale, the map distance or the real-world distance — is enough to calculate the third.
