What do these numbers mean?
  • “Percent of a number” returns a number: 20% of 150 is 30. “What percent” returns a percentage: 30 out of 150 is 20%.
  • Percentage change depends on the starting value; do not confuse it with a difference in percentage points.

Theory — what is a percentage and how is it calculated?

A percentage is simply a fraction with a denominator of one hundred, so 23% is written as 23/100. The calculator answers five practical questions: what is a given percentage of a number, what percentage share one value represents of a whole, what the percentage change between two values is, and what amount results from increasing or decreasing a value by a given percentage. For example, 23% of 1500 zł is 345 zł, and adding that as VAT gives a gross amount of 1845 zł.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 23% of 1500 zl?
345 zl. You multiply 1500 by 23 and divide by 100. The gross amount after adding VAT is 1845 zl.
Why don't an increase of 20% and a decrease of 20% return to the starting point?
Because the base is different. 100 zl after a 20% increase is 120 zl, and 120 zl after a 20% decrease is 96 zl, which is 4 zl less than the starting point. To go back from 120 to 100, you need to decrease by 16.67%.
How do I calculate the net amount, knowing the gross amount and a 23% rate?
You divide the gross amount by 1.23. For 1845 zl gross, this gives exactly 1500 zl net, and the tax itself is 345 zl.
What is the difference between a percentage point and a percent?
An increase from 4% to 5% is an increase of 1 percentage point, but as much as 25 percent. These are two different measures and they are often confused in texts about interest rates.
