Rounding calculator

Round decimals, whole numbers, tens or hundreds. Choose precision and see how halfway values and negative numbers are rounded.

Result: —

Fill in the fields above — the result is computed on this page.

What do these numbers mean?
  • If the first discarded digit is below 5, keep the last retained digit. At 5 or above, increase the absolute value. Halfway values round away from zero: 1.005 to two decimal places becomes 1.01; −1.005 becomes −1.01. To the nearest hundred, 1250 becomes 1300. Trailing zeros show the chosen precision.

Decimal rounding from the exact input text, up to 100 input digits. This differs from choosing significant figures. It does not use bankers rounding (ties to even).

How do I use this page?
  1. Enter your data or use the example.
  2. Choose the method or precision and press Calculate.
  3. Review the result, explanation and details; you can copy the calculation.

What this page does not do: Decimal rounding from the exact input text, up to 100 input digits. This differs from choosing significant figures. It does not use bankers rounding (ties to even).

Theory — how does rounding work?

When the first discarded digit is below 5, the last kept digit stays the same, while a digit of 5 or more increases its absolute value by one. Halfway values round away from zero, so 1.005 rounded to two decimals gives 1.01, and -1.005 gives -1.01. The calculator lets you round a number to a chosen precision, whether decimals, whole numbers, tens or hundreds, and shows the rule it applied.
